A lock that has gone stiff usually needs cleaning and lubricating rather than replacing, and a key that snaps is often the symptom rather than the cause. Outdoor locks, padlocks and vehicle compartment locks benefit most from regular treatment. Dry lubricants are preferred inside pin tumbler mechanisms because they do not hold grit.
