The code is stamped on the front of the lock, and on some mailboxes on the metal tab behind the door instead. Mailbox codes frequently end in letters, which are part of the code rather than a batch marker.
A mailbox lock is opened every day and is usually among the first locks in a building to wear out. Neighbouring compartments almost never share a code, so the number has to come off your own lock rather than a neighbour's. Where no readable code is left, replacing the lock is the way back in, and new keys come with it.
